A Warm Welcome

Ephesians 2:19 "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household"

She walked up the wet walkway which cast a mirror-like reflection of her silhouette. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, but there were still puddles scattered throughout the surrounding area and raindrops which hung on the blades of grass. Everything seemed to shimmer with a glossy coating as the objects reflected the moonlight. Her heels clicked on the concrete and up the porch steps. She reached her hand out and grasp the cool metal door knob. Music and muffled voices could be heard before the door even opened. The noise intensified as she entered the house. The house was packed as people stood shoulder to shoulder, wall to wall. A few individuals followed her every movement and those who weren't staring were too absorbed in their cliques to notice her arrival. She glanced around for a familiar face, but saw none. Migrating through each room, she searched for a place of belonging and found none. She felt distant and out of place among the groups of individuals. Navigating to the corner of the living room she found an empty chair and sat down. Sitting down, she pretended to act preoccupied to send a message to those around her that she belonged and didn't need anyone to come talk with her. However, inside her heart cried out for someone to come over and make her feel welcome....

Her boots made fresh imprints in the newly fallen snow as she walked up to the front door. Her gloves slipped against the smooth metal of the door knob as she tried to turn it. She tried again, wishing she wouldn't have to take off her glove and expose her hand to the frigid air. Just as she was about to remove her glove the door opened. A rush of warm air rushed past her face. The smell of a delicious feast filled her nostrils. Familiar faces lit up upon seeing her walk through the door as they rushed to greet her. Before she could even finish taking off her coat and gloves, she was surrounding with hugs, smiles, and conversation. One individual took her coat, purse, and gloves and hung them up for her. A few others showed her into the living room where a warm fire was burning in the fireplace. She sat down in a comfortable arm chair and enjoyed the fellowship with these people. Their spirits were as warm as the crackling fire. The orange glow  wasn't only coming from the light of the fire but seemed to shine through each person as they continued to show her kindness and love. Soon the meal was ready and they sat down to enjoy the food together. She not only felt welcome, but knew she was a vital part of this family. These people were familiar to her, she knew each by name, and they knew her. They treasured this precious time with one another.

There is a great deal of difference between these two "welcoming moments." This past Sunday when my pastor put this verse up on the screen in our sanctuary it stood out to me. I grew up in a wonderful church and often referred to them as my church FAMILY. They weren't just people I went to church with, they were truly part of my eternal, spiritual family. I felt welcomed by them, loved by them, and knew I belonged. When we become a Christian and ask Jesus to be Lord in our life we become connected to every other Christian. We are welcomed into God's loving family with open arms. There is no more feeling left out, feeling like you don't belong, feeling alone. Once you become a part of God's family you have a place set at God's great feast and are sent a personal invitation to join in. :-) God rejoices when you enter His family and celebrates your presence at His banquet.

"Thank you Lord, that I no longer am alone in this world. I thank you that my family now goes much deeper than flesh and blood. Thank you for always welcoming me with open arms and sending me a personal invitation to join your banquet.
In Jesus Name,
Amen"
